In April 2023, Core Faculty Dr. Timothy Newfield hosted a 22-talk, 2-day meeting that brought together scholars from many disciplines, including History, Archaeology, Anthropology, Paleopathology, and Paleogenomics, in an effort to understand, or improve our collective understanding of, the disease burden humans carried across Eurasia in the first millennium CE. Of historians, scholars discussed Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Latin, and Sanskrit language sources.

In the following months, the participants coauthored a paper, a benchmark of sorts, about where we are / what we know about epidemic disease before 1000 CE.
