The Hoya talks with Derek Goldman about Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski and the life of World War II hero, Holocaust witness, and Georgetown University professor Jan Karski. Goldman shares the story of Remember This‘s origin and evolution, and his considerations when writing and directing this visceral play. In his view, this is a hopeful play, not because it has a happy ending, but because of its call to action and to engage in dialogue at the end. “Where is this happening now? Because versions of it are. And how are we implicated? And what are we to do about it?”, are some of the questions the play raises. “the hope comes from the idea that Karski’s work as a teacher, as a witness is still alive and burning in the potential energy of young people who are like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to do something with this'”, he concludes.
