“The Global Syndemic of Obesity, Undernutrition, and Climate Change”

Posted in Scholarship  |  Tagged ,

In this publication, Emily Mendenhall and Merrill Singer respond to the work the The Lancet Commission on the Global Syndemic of Obesity, Undernutrition, and Climate Change. Mendenhall and Singer stress the importance of addressing the link between food production, a changing climate, and malnutrition is crucial. They also offer a critique of the conception of a “global syndemic”, as diabetes becomes syndemic differently from one location to another, because variations exist in how the disease materialises in relation to political and epidemiological histories. However, they also consider the potential benefits of thinking about obesity as a global syndemic.
