In the Better healthcare blog, Dr. Michael Pottash writes about the problems with advance directives, which, in his view, “have proved less than useful”. Rather than abandoning them, as some have argued, he provides specific guidelines for doctors, patients and families to take into account, for an advance directive to be useful: 1) It should provoke conversation at home, 2) It should be readable, and 3) It should focus on values instead of interventions.
