The Chinchorro Mummies

Hosted by the Center for Latin American Studies and the Georgetown University Medical Humanities Initiative, this public lecture featured Prof. Bernardo Arriaza (Universidad de Tarapacá and Dumbarton Oaks). Prof. Arriaza shared insights into the Chinchorro culture’s intricate mortuary practices; among the world’s earliest known examples of artificial mummification and explored their cultural and scientific significance in understanding life and death in ancient northern Chile.
