On May 21, 2019, John McNeill delivered the 2019 Sir John Elliott Lecture in Atlantic History, titled “Health and Disease History of the Caribbean, 1491-1850: Two Syndemics”, at Oxford University’s Rothermere American Institute.

In this lecture, McNeill builds upon his research for a new book project, Sea and Land: An Environmental History of the Caribbean, and his 2010 book Mosquito Empires, to study 7,200 years of Caribbean disease ecology history, framing the latter 500 or so years under the concept of syndemics. His focus in mainly on the implications, especially for demography, of health and disease.
