The Georgetown University Medical Center wrote about the novel learning opportunities that the Georgetown University Medical Humanities Initiative provides for undergraduate and medical students, by extending classical humanities studies into the realm of illness and disease. In the piece, Dr. Lakshmi Krishnan reflects that “we’ve given short shrift to how culture and society affect the implementation of various medical practices” That is what the medical humanities is seeking to change, and, as Nicoletta Pireddu points out, “Georgetown’s Jesuit values and its educational mission of cura personalis make it an ideal institution for the Medical Humanities Initiative”.
Amongst the innovative learning opportunities provided by the Medical Humanities Initiative, the Georgetown University Medical Center mentioned “Health Equity Think Tank,” taught by Dr. Christopher J. King, and Dr. Edilma Yearwood, and “Pandemics: Texts and Contexts”, taught by Dr. Krishnan. Angelette Pham, who participated in that class in the Fall 2020 semester, reflected on the variety of perspectives that humanities and STEM majors, ranging from first years to seniors, and a few medical student auditors provided to the class. “Each brought their own experiences and expertise to the table, which bolstered the consilience and relevance of our discussions.”
